Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of Richard Shaw's fees and expenses in connection with over a hundred trials of those for whom he worked as solicitor, with annotations in the same hand in red ink. The manuscript begins with about a hundred pages of expenses related to Warren Hastings' trial. Shaw records the House of Lords session in 1787 during which he was approached to take on Hastings' case; the time spent reading books and reports related to the case; his failed request to employ the same short-hand writer used by the prosecution; and time and money spent preparing briefs, writing letters, translating letters in Bengal, making copies of speeches and letters, attending on various persons and Parliament sessions, and making extracts. Shaw also records fees and expenses for other trials and legal disputes, including the trial of Captain James Norman; a dispute between the Proprietors of the Plate Glass Manufactory with Kemp & Son; an action brought against Miss Turnbull by a goldsmith; and a property dispute concerning a ship named Lord Holland East India Man. Elsewhere, he records his fees for advising on real estate purchases and sales, including that of Brigadier General Napier Christie Burton. He also negotiates powers of attorney for lands in the West Indies; draws up marriage settlements; and draws wills. His signature appears throughout in recording amounts paid to him.

Warren Hastings (1732-1818) was the first governor-general of British India, from 1773 to 1785. He joined the British East India Company in 1750 as a clerk. In 1757 he was made the British Resident of Murshidabad; appointed to the Calcutta council in 1761; a member of the Madras council in 1769; made governor of Bengal in 1772; and appointed the first Governor-General of India in 1773.
